Endemic corruption, violence, lawlessness, astronomical unemployment, no opportunities, history of politics of terror, oligarchy, a failed state by all standards.
Vanishing funds i.e. Petro Caribe, 2010 Earthquake funds, No transparency at all, government officials living the high life, No basic service to the population such as, electricity, water, healthcare - Lawlessness: gang violence, insecurity, proliferation of assault weapons in the hands of young gangsters, a failed justice and law enforcement system. And the list goes on forever.
Who would take this turn-around chalenge of epic gargantuan proportion? I wonder if an impotent septuagenarian multi billionaire currently on a quixotic mission would?
Thus is the case of today's Haiti. Those of us old enough remember a totally different place: Respect, pride, integrity were the standards. We had problems but not like today. We remember places like Bicentenaire, Rond Point, Cabane Choucoune, Le Lambi, Ibo Beach, etc. Yes Once upon a time Haiti was a country albeit with problems, but nothing like today. How did we get there?
I have been an entrepreneur most of my professional life, it runs in my blood, but I have never seen such a failed state. And I travelled with the marines, and as an analyst for an international consulting firm. Never have I seen such chaos by design. Yes Haiti's current situation is all by design. How do you rationalize the lack of basic services that we take for granted in most countries, developed or developing, when over twenty billion dollars passed through the hands of corrupt officials during the past twenty years. To date no one, local or foreign, has provided a valid explanation. Why the Diaspora tolerates and enables this failed system? When are we gonna say ENOUGH?
